For a new website owner when you hit publish on your WordPress blog it can feel a bit exhilarating. This is especially true when you have worked particularly hard on your piece and are excited to finally show the world what you have come up with. That’s why it can be such a disappointment when the response is less than what you’d imagined. Fortunately, we have some helpful tips for increasing your exposure after you publish a post.

Ask Readers to Subscribe

Have you ever heard the expression that the answer is always “no” if you never ask? This is actually very relevant when it comes to driving more readers to your site. One way to ensure they keep coming back for more and more is to simply ask them to do so by subscribing to your blog. All it takes is their email and you can let them know whenever a new post goes up.

This seemingly simple strategy actually carries a number of benefits with it, and here’s some more to get even more subscribers. In fact, you should go out of your way to leverage this tactic because it could, all by itself, make the biggest difference where your success is concerned.

Obviously, having a reader’s email address is fantastic for generating return visitors. You don’t have to worry that they’ll stray and eventually forget about your site. All you need to do is make sure they’re notified when a new post goes up ( MailChimp is awesome for this).

Furthermore, you can now also tell your subscribers about new services or products you have to offer. This is an unrivalled method for product launches or simply boosting your revenue. Putting on a sale? Let your subscribers know about it!

Let Your Network Know When You Hit Publish

If you’re not using at least a couple of social media platforms, there is no way your new blog is seeing its potential in terms of readers. Sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter make it as easy as possible to get your content in front of new eyes.

To be fair, this won’t necessarily be easy. Just having an account isn’t enough. While Facebook and LinkedIn ensure that anyone who connects with you will also see content you publish, Twitter doesn’t quite work the same way.
In either case, if you’re not spending time engaging with your network, you’re going to publish posts to a tepid response.

The other great thing about this strategy is you can always remind people about old posts from months or years ago, thus bringing fresh readers to old content.

Find Opportunities for Backlinks

Another awesome way to generate traffic to your blog is by finding opportunities to have others backlink to it. Ideally, you’ll want to do this beforehand. Look at the sites you know your market likes to visit and then generate copy you know those sites may want to link to.

For example, if you’re a graphic designer, a lot of the businesses you’d like to work for probably visit a particular site that covers their interests. Therefore, you should think about a piece that this other site might find helpful to your mutual market.

Write that piece and then send a link to the editor. Just let them know you’re a longtime reader yourself and thought they may like the piece you wrote. Tell them they should feel free to link, like and share it too.

This isn’t going to land every time, but build up a list of editors you can write too and it shouldn’t take long to do after each post. Every backlink you get will bring huge results, so it’s definitely worth it.

Try Pay Per Click Marketing

Some of you may not have much of a network at the moment or even the kind of traffic it takes to generate email subscriptions. In that case, it’s time to use Google AdWords and leverage some PPC marketing after you hit publish on your blog.

Don’t worry—you don’t have to spend a fortune. Start with, say, $20 a week and you’ll not only bring readers to your blog, but also get a feel for the information your market wants.

Never stop at just publishing a post and leaving it there. You should also be following the four above tips to make sure it’s actually getting in front of the right targeted readers. That’s the whole point after all.
